Monty's is a laid-back hang out place located in Miami Beach's ritzy South of Fifth neighborhood. It looks like a Key West dive-bar, offering below mediocre food; and that's exactly how the locals like it!
On November 3, Miami Beach residents got to decide on the construction of a 385 foot tall residential tower on waterfront city land, in exchange for a tiny park gifted by the developer. This proposed development meant that Monty's would have to be demolished. The result was a big "No." We locals love Monty's.
Monty's is a sports bar, meet up place and hang out place all rolled into one. A great place to enjoy a drink with friends, while watching the sunset on Biscayne Bay; it's a place where you can strike up a conversation with people from all walks of life: traders, hedge fund guys, realtors, business professionals, "yachties", admins, etc. during a Friday happy hour. Many relationships, from marriages to hook ups have begun at Monty's, and countless business deals have been forged here. There is no other place like it in all of Miami Beach.

As I sit at the bar writing this article, the theme song from Rocky III, Eye of the Tiger by Survivor is playing in the background. What a befitting song. Monty's rose up to the challenge of its "rivals." The first challenge was the Covid-19 lockdowns, and then standing up against a greedy developer, elected officials and PACs campaigning non-stop to get the project approved. Locals are sick of historic places getting destroyed for yet more development. Monty's survived and it will stay in our neighborhood for many years to come.
